The Chair of Agricultural Production and Resource Economics (PuR) maintains a strong international focus. As part of ongoing efforts to expand global collaboration, Prof. Johannes Sauer and Carlos Böke Pascual recently traveled to South Africa to strengthen partnerships with leading universities and research institutes.
From February 26 to March 7, 2025, the delegation visited researchers in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Johannesburg, and Pretoria to explore potential academic exchanges and research cooperation. Their productive meetings included visits to farms and rural areas, offering first-hand insights into the country’s diverse landscapes and agricultural challenges.
South Africa continues to grapple with recurring droughts and the escalating effects of climate change. In addition, its complex historical legacy continues to impact land ownership, agricultural productivity, and economic inequality. These pressing issues open up numerous opportunities for research into sustainable agricultural practices and policy measures that can contribute to more equitable food systems.
This fact-finding mission is part of PuR’s broader efforts to foster international collaboration. Recent shocks—including the COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and resulting economic disruptions—have underscored the need for more resilient food systems across Africa. PuR’s expertise in agricultural and resource economics in emerging economies can support local institutions in addressing these challenges, paving the way for future joint research initiatives. The Chair remains committed to seeking opportunities for cooperation with academic and non-academic partners across the Global South.
We extend our sincere gratitude to our colleagues at the University of Cape Town, the University of Stellenbosch, the University of Johannesburg, and the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy for their valuable time, insights, and discussions.
